Mad Rollin’ Dolls kick off a new era

Scores: Unholy Rollers 89, Reservoir Dolls 69
Vaudeville Vixens 164, Quad Squad 56

The Mad Rollin' Dolls kicked off the 2009 season in a new home, the Veterans Memorial Coliseum at the Alliant Energy Center. But new digs were just the beginning. There was a league record crowd just shy of 1,600, and a sea change in league power on the track. After four season of domination by the Reservoir Dolls and Quad Squad, the Unholy Rollers grabbed their first ever win against the Reservoir Dolls, 89-69, and the Vaudeville Vixens crushed the 2008 champion Quad Squad 164-56.

The Unholy Rollers are back with their entire 2008 roster. The Reservoir Dolls feature four rookie skaters. The first half threatened to be a rout for the Unholies, who took lead jammer 10 times in 14 jams. Only a late power jam by Mouse kept the Reservoir Dolls in the game at half with a score of 51-29. The Unholies kept piling on the points in the second period behind Wild Berry Punch and Jewels of Denile, but a late surge by the Reservoir Dolls made the bout look closer than it was.

Before the Quad Squad and Vaudeville Vixens got under way, referee James Blond surprised Britnee Smears with a marriage proposal. He had plenty of help, the other skaters spelling it out to the crowd in three-foot high letters, "WILL YOU MARRY ME?" Britnee was skating again for the first time since she broke her leg in the 2007 finals.

The Vixens launched their way to a huge 88-31 half time lead with a flurry 14 of grand slams. Rookie Juke Box, in her first appearance as a jammer, finished the half with a 20-point jam. The score continue to pile up with nine more Vixen grand slams in the second period, including a 20-point jam for Ace S. Wild. The Quad Squad lost many veterans for this season and played with 6 rookie skaters. That means half of their skaters are in their first season.

The league was excited about their new home, but no one expected the crowd that waited patiently in line to buy tickets at the door. The start was delayed a half-hour to get the crowd into the seats. When it was over, the fans didn't want to leave, asking skaters for autographs and pictures.

A portion of the proceeds of this bout will benefit the Rainbow Project, Inc.

The next bout will be Sunday, Feb. 1, at Veterans Memorial Coliseum at the Alliant Energy Center at 1 p.m. The early start means fans can attend the bout and still watch the Superbowl during the afterparty. Doors will open at 12:30 p.m.

To our many loyal fans, new and old, the Mad Rollin' Dolls would like to say a big “Thank you.” The move from our old home at Fast Forward to the Veterans Memorial Coliseum is a big one, and the turnout on Jan. 10th was beyond what any of us could have dreamed.

The season opener is almost upon us...

...and Harlot Bronte puts things better than I ever could, so hop over to read her piece Mad Rollin' Dolls open 2009 season in new digs at Coliseum at the Isthmus Daily Page. A pull from the article:

In addition to a larger space, unobstructed views, and a nearly unlimited number of comfortable seats, the center offers a host of possibilities for the organization’s growth. “Derby has always been an incredible event, and now our venue will reflect and amplify that,” says Janssen, who serves as a member of the board. “We are so grateful to Fast Forward for allowing us the space and time to grow and develop, and now we feel like a league full of beautiful butterflies on rollerskates, ready to burst from our cocoons and beat our wings in unison to cause the perfect storm of derby on the Alliant grounds!”

That's right, the derby butterflies are coming! So you'd better get your tickets now :)

Mad Rollin' Dolls kick off regular season at Veterans Memorial Coliseum

This Saturday, January 10, the Mad Rollin' Dolls, Madison's premiere women's flat-track roller derby league, will start their fifth home season in a brand new venue and at an earlier time.

The action starts at 6 p.m. in the Veterans Memorial Coliseum (formerly the Dane County Coliseum) at the Alliant Energy Center.

The Dolls played their final bout at Fast Forward Skate Center—which they called home for more than four years—last month, and are excited for their fifth regular season in Madison, featuring a seven-game schedule that will be held entirely at the Alliant Energy Center. The season's games will be spread out across the Alliant campus, including the Coliseum, Expo Hall, and Arena building. The Alliant Energy Center is located at 1919 Alliant Energy Center Way, Madison, near Rimrock Road and John Nolen Drive.

Saturday's match-ups will see the reigning 2008 champions, the Quad Squad, take on the Vaudeville Vixens, and the Reservoir Dolls will face the Unholy Rollers. The teams will introduce a fresh crop of skaters, and the season promises to be full of the fastest, strongest derby yet—and maybe a few surprises.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and the first jam starts at 6 p.m. Tickets for the bout are $10 in advance or $12 at the door. Tickets are available at MRD's local sponsors, including Freedom/Knuckleheads, Capitol City Tattoo, Cha Cha Beauty and Barber, High Noon Saloon, and Lakeside Press, and will be available at the Coliseum on bout night. You can also buy tickets online at madrollindolls.com.

Join the Dolls after the bout at the High Noon Saloon, 701 E. Washington Ave., for a season kickoff after-party featuring Them Damn Young Livers, The Hussy, and ifihadahifi. The show is free with ticket stub, $5 without. A portion of proceeds from the bout will be donated to the Rainbow Project, a local nonprofit organization that offers support to children and families throughout greater Madison and Dane County.

Be there!
