Holiday Joy and Mayhem on Wheels

Holiday Expo Bout 12/16/06

Final score: Ice Queens –111, Candy Canes – 95

Fans battled icy roads and an unplowed parking lot to get to the Madrollin’ Dolls bout Saturday, Dec. 16. But when they got there, a holiday party broke out.

Skaters from all four regular season MRD teams mixed up the line-ups to form two mega teams, changed their names and uniforms and presented naughty-and-nice roller derby holiday pageant, all tricked out with sparkly lights, glitter and bows to ring in the holidays.

Regular season bouts will be gritty and fierce, but this night’s bout was all about having fun and celebrating the season. The Ice Queens took to the track wearing tutus and striking ballerina poses, while the Candy Canes wore red frocks with white spirals. Elfin “Gingerbread Mouse” added a red Rudolph nose. Special holiday-themed names added to the festivities, with monikers like Throwing Star (Ninja), Dolly Holiday (Dolly Pardon Me), Tammy Faye Cookie Baker (Tammy Faye Undertaker), and Predatorah (Predator).

To add to the good-natured mayhem, announcers Bob Noxious (Bobsled) and Baam Baam (Yukon Jack Cornelius) served as team captains. Nutcrackerjack (Crackerjack) and Windy City’s Val Channukapon (Val Capone) took over the mikes. The nicely naughty Cherry Pop Burlesque entertained between periods.

But you’re asking – how was the game? Frankly, we can’t remember. But here are some highlights.

*The bout introduced a platter full of fresh meat bouting in public for the first time. Fans will want to learn their names and numbers fast, because these new girls are looking quick and dangerous.

*Veterans Mouse and Back Doris are stronger and wilier than ever and both jammed for double-digits.

*Action in the pack had fans sucking in their breath and protecting their beers as blockers sent each other flying like Santa’s reindeer.

The Dolls donated a portion of the proceeds from this bout to WORT Radio.

It was fun, but things get serious when the regular season starts Saturday, Jan. 26. The season opener pits the Quad Squad against the Unholy Rollers and the Vaudeville Vixens against the Reservoir Dolls.

I'd just like to add a "Photo by Chris Norris" in the comments. :)

And I didn't realize there was an MRD blog. Subscribed!
